Putrajaya forms panel over ‘Selangor water crisis’

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — A special Cabinet committee for the “Selangor water crisis” has been set up and will be chaired by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin but it will only invite state government officials for their views, Green Technology, Energy and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin said today.
He was quoted by The Star today as saying the other committee members are Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar, Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) CEO Datuk Seri Idris Jala, Federal Territories Minister Raja Datuk Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, and himself.
“We are studying all the issues of these two matters, all issues regarding the water supply in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya,” said Chin(picture), referring to Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor’s (Syabas) proposal to ration water and the Selangor state government’s request to take over Syabas operations.
He said the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday agreed to the committee, which would tackle the issues in a “holistic manner”.
But, he said, representatives from the Selangor state government were not invited to join the Cabinet committee.
“If we need to hear their views, we will call them,” said Chin, adding the special committee’s first meeting will be at 9am on Monday.
Selangor has disputed claims of a water shortage by Syabas, saying the dams in the state are overflowing in the current rainy season. But Syabas said it was referring to the water treatment plants which are at full capacity.
