State BN: Selangor doesn’t have water crisis action plan

SHAH ALAM, July 24 — Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) took the Selangor state government to task today for not divulging its action plan to solve the water crisis in the state.
Selangor BN coordinator Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed said the Selangor government was still flip-flopping and deliberately prolonging the issue by using Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) as a target to confuse the people on the water issue.
“We are still waiting until today for the state government’s plan to tackle the water crisis in Selangor. In fact, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (picture) had openly admitted there was no specific plan to solve the issue,” he told reporters after handing over food for breaking fast to the public at the Shah Alam Commuter Station in Section 19, here, today.
He also questioned why the Selangor government only attacked Syabas on the water issue when there were other companies also responsible for treating water such as Syarikat Pengeluaran Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) and Konsortium Abbas Sdn Bhd (Abbas).
He said the two companies were suppliers and supervisors of treated water which is then bought by Syabas for distribution to consumers.
“So why do they attack Syabas? It is clear that their action is political whilst the issue that needs attention is the amount of treated water which is getting less currently,” he said.
Mohd Zin also questioned whether the Selangor government’s intention of taking over Syabas would solve the water crisis.
Yesterday, the Special Cabinet Committee on the Selangor Water Issue rejected the plan by the Selangor government to take over the management of Syabas because it did not abide by several terms in the agreement, including allowing an increase in the water tariff after rejecting plans to build the Langat 2.
The committee decided that the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant would be continued and tenders would be opened in a month.
At the same time, Selangor State Government Exco Dr Xavier Jayakumar stressed that the state government would continue its plan to take over the management of Syabas.
He said the state government was also prepared to hold a forum for the people to decide the best solution for the problem. — Bernama
