Storm brewing in Nesa

Former vice president V Nadarajan claims that the newly elected directors are purging the cooperative of the president's loyalists.
PETALING JAYA: Nesa Cooperative, one of the largest Indian cooperatives in Malaysia, is heading towards troubled waters after its vice-president was removed from office yesterday.
The former vice-president V Nadarajan claimed that it was an attempt by the new board of directors to purge the cooperative of its president’s loyalists.
“I was replaced by a newcomer, an 81-year old man called SK Dorairaj,” he said.
Nesa is helmed by former MIC deputy president S Subramaniam who is now medically incapacitated.
Last month, Nesa’s delegates cast their ballots to elect four out of seven directors for the cooperative which saw two news faces emerging on the board.
They were Klang businessman “Oms” Thiagaran and Makkal Osai general manager M Periasamy. MIC member SVS Vellu and K Kandasamy were retained.
Nadarajan claimed that R Balakrishnan, a long-time Subramaniam loyalist, was also removed from his position as the cooperative’s land committee chairman by the new board recently.
He urged the new board members to prove their loyalty to Subramaniam by appointing S Kandan as Nesa’s new president instead of using the MIC leader’s name to further their own agenda.
“I spoke to Subramaniam’s family about this before and they were in support of Kandan helming Nesa but the new board rejected it. I now challenge the new board to appoint Kandan to prove that they are still loyal to Subramaniam,” he said.
