Syabas suit: DAP to raise RM200,000 for Pua

DAP is raising RM200,000 to pay for damages awarded to Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) in its defamation suit against Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua.

The first campaign is dubbed RM1 for Water Rights: 100,000 Malaysians Support Tony Pua vs Syabas, where citizens are urged to donate RM1 each to the party account.

A second campaign involves a fund raiser dinner on July 17, where a long list of Pakatan Rakyat top brass will be speaking.

Diners will be charge RM100 per person or RM1,000 per table. VIP tables cost RM3,000.

“The success of this campaign will prove to the federal government that the rights of Malaysians to enjoy affordable water must not be privatised to crony companies of BN,” DAP treasurer Fong Kui Loon told a press conference today.

On June 6, the Kuala Lumpur High Court judg Amelia Tee Hong Geok Abdullah found Pua liable for defamation. Pua filed an appeal o June 22 and the court have fixed case management on July 24.

Despite filing the appeal, Syabas’ lawyers have written to Pua to demand payment awarded by the court.

Syabas filed the suit in Jan 28, 2011 over an article published byNanyang Siang Pay in November 2010.

The firm claimed that Pua had uttered words which implied that Syabas was incompetent in managing water supply rights, given its inability to manage its debts or replace water pipes, and that the company was making improper claims to raise the tariff which are aimed for self-benefit and to the detriment of the public at large.

In claiming the defence of qualified privilege, Pua said that as a politician and a member of the Selangor government water review panel, he took reasonable steps to verify his information based on what was publicly available.
