Shah Alam bungalow opposite EC chief's COLLAPSES, one killed
SHAH ALAM - A two-storey bungalow that was under renovation collapsed here today, killing one and seriously injuring five other Indonesian workers trapped inside.
All those within were removed from under the debris and rushed to the Tunku.Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang, with the last person rescued at 10.15pm.
They were all said to be in critical condition.
Two of them each lost a leg in the incident.
Ten other workers at the site escaped with light injuries.
The house, located across the street from the home of Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof, crashed at about 4.20pm.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Services director Othman Abdullah, who was at the scene at Jalan Jed 7/5 in front at Seksyen 7, said the rescue team had dug their way to reach the victims.
"We could hear their voices and dug our way to bring them out," he said.
He added that the department will investigate with the police and the Shah Alam City Council to determine the cause of the collapse.
The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) arrived at about 9pm to support the rescue operation.
The deceased was identified as Totok Mohamad Anthony, while the two men who lost heir legs were named Waras and Gharlami.
Bangladeshi construction worker Muhammad Salam Torali who was working at another house nearby said he heard the crash and ran towards the site.
"I saw the second floor collapsing and I helped to pulled out two victims with another worker who was lightly injured. Another man was already dead… I couldn't do anything else," he told reporters.
A worker known only as Lim said he saw one person crawling under the rubble.
Abdul Aziz said he heard the loud crash around 4.25 pm and called the police immediately.
Shah Alam OCPD ACP Zahedi Ayub said he did not rule out weakness in the structure as being behind the collapse, but said the police will investigate further.
