Work still in progress to improve lives, concedes Najib

The government's commitment to change the fate of Malaysians is akin to 'work in progress', said Prime Minister Najib Razak.

He said although tremendous effort was put for the well-being of the people, the government was aware that much more needed to be done.

NONE"We need the support of the people, we need a new mandate from the people. So, if you give your mandate, I assure you, the effort would not only proceed but would be intensified in future," he said when speaking at the Malaysian Deepavali Open House 2012 at Ladang Info Ternak Sungai Siput today.

Also present at the ceremony were Perak Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Information Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim and wife, Masnah Rais, as well as national and state leaders.

The prime minister said, as an example, the government had provided various facilities and huge allocations for the well-being of the Indian community.

He said, among government efforts to raise the living standard of the Indian community was by providing allocations for education and skills development, scholarships, as well as increasing the number of admissions into universities.

"As a government, we have made much effort to change the fate of Malaysians," he noted.

In this regard, Najib called on all Malaysians to hold to the principle of mutual trust based on 'nambikei' between the people and the government.

"Let's hold on to 'nambikei'... we fulfill our promises," he said.

Najib said he was happy and overwhelmed by the reception to the Malaysian Deepavali Open House by the communities of various races in the country.

He said such a response might not be possible in certain countries as no mutual respect existed amongst one another.

"In fact, they were in strife and were suspicious of one another, but in Malaysia, we hold to the spirit and principle of 1Malaysia, which has become our guiding principle," he said.

PM leaves for Asean Summit

Later in the evening, Najib left for Cambodia to head the Malaysian delegation to the 21st Asean Summit and Related Summits in Phnom Penh.

Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor left in a special aircraft at 7.45pm from  Kompleks Bunga Raya, Kuala Lumpur Internatioal Airport.

The delegation includes Foreign Minister Anifah Aman and International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed.

At the three-day meeting, beginning tomorrow, Najib is expected to highlight, among others, the Global Movement of Moderates, South China Sea and Palestinian issues.

On the sidelines of the Asean Summit and Related Summits, Najib is scheduled to meet Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, Burma President Thien Sein and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
