Floods cripple Kuantan, worst since 1971

Kuantan has been crippled by severe flooding, which residents describe as the worst in four decades.

NONEFlooding began before noon today after more than 10 hours of rain. China Press described it as the worst flooding in Kuantan since 1971.

According to a Pahang Disaster Operation Control Centre spokesperson, 14 main junctions of the city were inundated with water about one meter deep by about 11am.

“Evacuation is currently under way,” he said, adding that the water level has receeded since then.

NONEOfficials are presently monitoring water levels at Sungai Galing and Sungai Isap and an official statement is expected at 8pm.

It is believed that thousands of people are affected by the flood. Dozens of photographs of abandoned vehicles surrounded by flood water have been heavily circulated on social media networks.

Kuantan resident Hasnul Hisham told Malaysiakini that the Jalan Beserah area was the worst hit.

“Sungai Galing is overflowing, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Galing's retaining wall has been damaged,” Hasnul said.
Roads to avoid
According to the Kuantan's community Facebook page, the following roads and areas are now underwater:
  • Jalan Lim Ho Lek
  • Parling Pasar Kuantan
  • Jalan Bukit Ubi 1
  • Jalan Wong Ah Jang
  • Jalan Mahkota
  • Jalan Abdul Aziz
  • Taman Air Putih (Lorong 54)
“Only heavy vehicles can pass through these areas,” the community page said at about 4.30pm today.

NONEMotorists are also advised to avoid Jalan Imbi and the roads surrounding Shah Putra, Stadium Kuantan, Mega (heading to ECM), Weskot and roads close to Sungai Isap.

A photograph uploaded on the community page at about 1pm today shows residents at the Semambu housing area wading in thigh-high water, while rain continued to fall.

Hasnul, who resides at Taman Teratai, Kubang Buaya said that water has entered his home and the family has had to move their valuables to higher areas.

“It's not too dangerous, but Kuantan residents sure got a surprise today,” he said.

Kuantan, has a population 607,778 and was the scene of the Himpunan Hijau protest against the Lynas rare earth refinery some 25 kilometres away in Gebeng.
Jerantut affected as well
According to Bernama, the Air Putih and Semambu areas, people began leaving their homes as early as 10 am with important items after a river burst its banks and floodwaters rose as high as one metre.

Several housing estates in Sungai Isap, such as Taman LKNP, Bukit Setongkol, Taman Perumahan Transit Quarters and Taman Teratai, were flooded to a depth of between 0.1 metre and one metre.

Meanwhile, in Jerantut, police advised 10,000 people living in low-lying areas along the Tembeling and Pahang rivers in the district to evacuate immediately if the levels of the rivers continued to rise.

Jerantut Police chief Supt Azid Ismail said the heavy rain over the past three days could cause the Tembeling and Pahang rivers to burst their banks at any time.

He also advised the 50 boat operators providing services to Taman Negara to stop doing so if the Tembeling River level continued to rise.
