Police to investigate Info Department website hacking

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 — Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department has set up a special task force to investigate the hacking of the Information Department’s website yesterday. 

Its director, Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan, said the task force was set up under its Cyber and Multimedia Crime Investigation Unit and that it would carry out a detailed investigation to ensure that the incident would not recur. 

“We will investigate the incident and take action against those involved,” he said when contacted by Bernama today. 

He said the investigation under section 5 of the Computer Crimes Act would involve various aspects, including identifying the Internet protocol (IP) address of local and foreign users. 

The e-Akhbar and e-Press applications in the department’s website were hacked with two posted statements, titled “Memo Permohonan Rakyat Malaysia” and “Perdana Menteri Secara Rasminya Meletak Jawatan”. 

Meanwhile, Information director-general Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman was reported as saying that he believed that the posting of the two false statements was aimed at creating an uncertain situation and tarnish the image of the department as the government’s official media. — Bernama
