Adam Adli to be charged with sedition tomorrow

Student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim is expected to be charged under the Sedition Act 1948 tomorrow morning at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court.

According to his lawyer N Surendran, this was confirmed by the investigating officer today.

Adam, 24, is currently under investigation for his speech during aforum on May 13.

He had urged the public to take to the streets in protest against electoral fraud.

On Saturday, he wasarrested to facilitate investigations under Section 4 of the Sedition Act.

Under this law, he faces a maximum three-year jail term, a maximum fine of RM5,000 or both.

A day later, the police said that he was also investigated underSection 124 of the Penal Code for actions detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

This is a more serious offence, punishable with a maximum 20-year jail term.

It is understood that he will not be charged under this law.

Critics have pointed out that the police have acted very swiftly against Adam whiledragging their feet whenever complaints are made against BN figures.

Since Monday, there has been nightly vigils attended by hundreds of Malaysians from of all walks of life outside the Jinjang police lock-up where he is held.
