Chua now a proven liability

Sabah MCA has blamed 'eccentric' party chief Dr Chua Soi Lek’s choice of candidates and compromises made with Umno for the party's worst ever performance in the polls.
KOTA KINABALU: The knives are out for MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek in Sabah where the party was erased from the state electoral map in last Sunday’s 13th general election.
Sabah MCA secretary Kelvin Lim wants Chua to take responsibility for the party’s disastrous result and to immediately step down from his post.
He said this was the only honourable and appropriate way out for Chua as a responsible leader like former MCA president Ong Ka Ting who stepped down from his post, after MCA’s poor performance in the 12GE in 2008.
In the 2008 general election MCA only retained 15 parliament and 31 state constituencies.
“Now that MCA only managed to retain seven parliament and 11 state constituencies, should Chua Soi Lek unashamedly stay on until the next party election?” he asked in a statement issued yesterday.
Lim said he made the call in the best interest of the party given that the seven parliament and 11 state constituencies it retained was its worst showing in its 66-year history.
Lim said Chua’s credibility had already been damaged by a sex scandal and he had been a liability to the party and was the main reason behind its terrible defeat.
“Chua is thus no longer suitable to lead MCA. We could not afford to waste more time. Chua must immediately step down and hand over his post to a more capable leader for a revamp in the fastest possible time,” said Lim.
He also reminded that when its former Wanita chief Chew Mei Fun resigned on April 9, 2009, Chua had said that “leaders come and go”.
Chua a ‘laughing stock’
Chua had also voluntarily resigned from all his posts following the sex scandal caught on the CCTV before making a comeback as the party leader, and the party’s poor showing now should be good enough reason for him to do the same again.
“So, there’s no reason for him not to gentlemanly and gracefully step down, this time,” he said.
Lim said Chua had not only become a ‘laughing stock’ but also an insult for the Chinese community in the country due to his eccentric nature and penchant for condemning his own comrades had added salt to its wounds.
Lim is believed to have received the mandate from top party leaders in the state and perhaps even at national level to criticise Chua’s decision to give away three of its seats to Umno.
The decision gave its opponents the chance to question its capability of defending and championing the rights and interest of the Chinese community.
The choice of candidates which his detractors saw as being those close to him, too caused great discontent among its leaders and members, added Lim.
“Furthermore, as a party president whose morality and credibility is seriously tainted by sex scandal, how could he claim to be an effective leader for the Chinese community? How can he champion their rights and interest?” Lim asked.
He reiterated that so long as Chua remains, it would be difficult for MCA to rejuvenate and to regain its past honour and glory.
Claiming to be speaking in his personal capacity, Lim urged MCA members throughout the country to unite and push for a new and capable leadership.
