‘Don’t blame Soi Lek alone’

GEORGE TOWN - Penang MCA's poor performance in the 13th general election is the responsibility of all and not just party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Tanjong division chief Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun said it was unfair to point the finger at Chua for the party failing to win a single seat that was contested in Penang.
"Everyone in MCA should be responsible for the loss," the former state exco man said at a press conference today.
Loh was accompanied by six other state MCA division chiefs from Balik Pulau, Bayan Baru, Bukit Gelugor, Kepala Batas, Bukit Bendera and Batu Kawan.
Missing were representatives from three divisions – Jelutong, Permatang Pauh and Tasek Gelugor – who had last week demanded Chua to take responsibility for the party's dismal results by stepping down immediately.
Representatives from another three divisions – Bukit Mertajam, Nibong Tebal and Bagan – were not present although they were notified.
Although he did not appear to be backing Chua, Loh said if the former minister should resign, then everyone in the top leadership, including the central committee, should also resign.
He called on party members to respect the democratic process as MCA will begin elections in June to pick new branch, division and national leaders.
"Let those who are elected continue with MCA's struggle," he said, adding that deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had been appointed to head a task force aimed at revitalising and rejuvenating the party.
Once a political powerhouse, MCA has seen a reversal in fortunes as it won only seven of the 37 parliament seats and 11 of the 90 state constituencies it contested.
