Koh Tsu Koon resigns, Gerakan to shun cabinet

Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon announced that he and secretary general Teng Chang Yeow are resigning from their party posts next week.

gerakan cec meeting 110513 koh tsu koonAfter a meeting with fellow Gerakan leaders at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today, Koh said they have made the decision to take responsibility for Gerakan's dismal performance in the 13th general election.

Deputy president Chang Ko Youn (below) will take over as acting president until the party elections on October 26.
Koh will officially resign on May 16 while Teng will be exiting the party earlier, on May 11.

NONEHe said Gerakan's branch level elections will begin end of June before culminating with the national elections in October.

Apart from taking responsibility for Gerakan's return of only one parliamentary and three state seats in the election, Koh said his resignation was a decision made to also pave way for new leaders and to enable a "renewal" process in the party.

"I shall continue to support and serve the party by giving advice and ideas if and whenever needed.

“I also plan to contribute to Gerakan's training programme for party members," he added.
No to cabinet posts
Koh added Gerakan, just like MCA, will not take up any federal cabinet positions, but will take up state leadership positions instead.
"We do no plan to take up any cabinet positions, but we will accept any state appointments that are already made or are in the making," he said.

Koh dismissed suggestions that Gerakan's non-participation in the cabinet would mean they would be unable to voice their opinions to the government.

"I'm pretty sure BN has capable leaders who can voice out for all Malaysians," he said.
