Najib calls for national reconciliation

It is necessary to weed out extremism and racism, says Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak called for national reconciliation after Barisan Nasional won a simple majority of 128 seats in the 13th General Election.
“National reconciliation is necessary to weed out extremism and racism,” he said at a press conference held at Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
At press time, BN had won a simple majority of 128 parliament seats out of 222 contested to form the new federal government. In 2008, BN won 140 parliamentary seats.
Najib also emphasised on the need for moderation to ensure racial harmony is maintained.
When asked to assess his coalition’s performance, Najib said: “We expected it, but not to this extent.”
Nevertheless, Najib said he was happy over BN’s victory, especially in capturing the PAS led Kedah government.
He also conceded that BN’s campaign to woo the Chinese missed the mark, and said: “What we had planned did not reach them.”
On another question relating to the election process, Najib said: “We had a free and fair election. If you have allegations, please prove it. We have a transparent system.”
When asked on BN preparedness to face any dissatisfaction over the election results, he said the “authorities would be able to manage them.”
