A hollow victory for BN

The coalition performs even worse than in the 2008 general election, with Pakatan improving on its parliament seats tally.
KUALA LUMPUR: There was an overwhelming call for change but Barisan Nasional manages to hold on to federal power with a simple majority amid allegations of fraud and manipulation.
However, this is a hollow victory, with BN losing more parliament seats and Pakatan Rakyat improving on its 2008 tally.
Even in the battle for the states, BN only managed to edge Pakatan with slim majorities.
The election also saw the near decimation of MIC, MCA and Gerakan while caretaker Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s ambition of securing a two-thirds parliamentary majority also failed to materialise.
The ruling coalition also saw numerous ministers and deputy ministers falling in this polls, which was touted as the mother of all elections.
Najib, who is also Selangor BN chairman, failed to realise his dream of re-capturing the resource-rich state.
His decision to field Perkasa vice-president Zulkifli Noordin in Shah Alam despite him belittling the Hindu faith, and labelling the Chinese and Indians as illegal immigrants, also backfired.
The defeat of Zulkifli and Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali is also a blow to the movement’s patron Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In view of this, Najib cannot gloat about this election results for it can be considered worse than 2008, apart from winning back Kedah with a simple majority.
Furthermore, the opposition has also made significant inroads into Johor, which is considered a BN fortress. And here DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang destroyed the state’s former menteri besar Abdul Ghani Othman in Gelang Patah.
In the previous election, Najib’s predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was forced to step down when BN suffered what was considered to be its worst ever electoral setback in 2008.
And now under Najib’s rule, the ruling coalition has suffered an even worse battering. So will the daggers in Umno be out for him?
On the opposition front, DAP came out as the star performer while PAS lost in many of the seats it contested.
