Water woes top priority for MB Khalid

The menteri besar says reformation of the Pakatan state government is a “continuous process” in response to Azmin Ali’s criticisms.
KLANG: Freshly sworn-in Selangor menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today pledged to complete the restructuring of the state’s water services industry – an issue that has plagued Selangor for over two years.
“My focus right now is to welcome the prime minister’s call to begin with the national reconciliation process, by which the first test will be to resolve the restructuring of Selangor’s water industry,” Khalid told reporters at the Istana Alam Shah here.
“I have prepared a letter to the prime minister on this matter and hope that he will give positive feedback in line with the Water Industry Services Act.”.
He said Selangor also pledged that the Sungai Langat water treatment plant project, known as Langat 2, would be part of the restructure exercise.
The water restructuring in Selangor has been long drawn out due to the differences in opinion between the Federal Government, the Selangor state government and the water concessionaires in the state over the matter.
CIMB Research in March said the matter was likely to be prolonged as water concessionaire Puncak Niaga was unable to make a decision, citing “loopholes in the Selangor state government’s takeover offer”, the Edge reported.
Khalid was this morning sworn in as the state’s Menteri Besar for a second term, finally ending the reported dispute between him and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali for the top government post in the country’s richest state.
Last week, Azmin had called for a reformation of the Pakatan state government and highlighted its previous “failures” in responding to the rakyat’s problems, in what is seen as a move to undermine Khalid’s administration.
Responding to this, Khalid said: “it is a continuous process of reformation [for us].”
He also declined to specify whether Azmin would be part of the state’s executive lineup when queried by reporters.
“The selection process has begun…but I promised that I would not make any early announcement [over the executive lineup] until it is complete,” he said.
