Woman on hunger strike seeks royal intervention

The 72-year-old woman on a hunger strike against the Lynas' Advanced Materials Plant has urged the Agong to intervene and put pressure on the federal and state governments to immediately close the facility.

NONETuw Yin Lan, a native of Kuantan, made her appeal through a petition for an audience with the Agong at Istana Negara today.

Her petition stated that she has not consumed any food for the past 25 days to show her determination in seeking remedial action from the authorities.

"In fact, I am prepared to sacrifice my life, if it brings a thousand meanings to the three year struggle of your majesty's subject (who fought) to cease the plant's operation," she wrote.

She added that BN's electoral losses in Indera Mahkota and Kuantan were further proof that Kuantan folk were against the plant, which she claimed would cause harm to Kuantan residents if there were leakages.
Clad in a yellow tee-shirt, an enthusiastic Tuw was seen smiling and greeting a small group of supporters who gathered at the palace gates.
She was accompanied by former Selangor exco member Ronnie Liew and Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai into the palace compound where she handed the document to the royal private secretary at 12.20pm.
'Won't break fast'

Speaking to reporters after handing her petition, Tuw said her petition was symbolic because it was a slap in the face of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's indifference to the issue. Pahang is Najib's home state.

NONEAmong the 20 supporters who were outside the palace gates, some of whom urged her to break her fast because her life was at risk. She claimed to have consumed only water thus far.

However, she reassured them that she is capable of continuing her hunger strike.

“If I stop now, the people won't be able to see how important this issue truly is," she said.

Liu, another Pahang native, urged Najib to at least meet Tuw, warning that she was very serious about her hunger strike and that this was not the first time she had done so.
