Pakatan Rakyat has proposed Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar as deputy speaker and urged the Barisan Nasional to propose another name to assist the Speaker when the Parliament starts next week.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was to ensure fairness and transparency for both sides.
He said the two deputies would assist the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
PR had proposed Datuk Abdul Kadir Sulaiman, former Federal Court judge, for the job of Speaker.
Anwar said the Bandar Tun Razak MP and Selangor MB, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had sent these names to the Parliament on behalf of PR on June 10.
"The Yang di-Pertua Dewan Rakyat must be qualified and independent," Anwar told reporters at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Kamarudin is Pas' Tumpat MP. Anwar also gave an ultimatum to the government to hold a secret ballot on the appointment of the Speaker, or be prepared for major battle.
"I am giving a simple reminder that an impartial Speaker be appointed," Anwar said.
"We want to ensure we start clean. If they do not honour that in Parliament and bulldoze their own Speaker, then they are in for a fight in Parliament." - June 20, 2013.
