Paul Low dismisses 'cosmetic' solutions to corruption

Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low has countered his critics’ calls for immediate action against corruption, saying that he is not interested in “cosmetic changes”.

“Some critics have given me 100 days to show results. Yes it is possible, but these will only be cosmetic changes in which I am not interested. So I am sorry to disappoint them.

“Instead, I will strongly push for long-term solutions or even whole paradigm shifts that will penetrate much deeper to address the root causes of each issue,” he said.

NONEThis is according to the text of his keynote speech at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) convention in Putrajaya tonight, a copy of which had been distributed to the press.

He said this would be done through a series of programmes that would affect all levels of the government.

Low, who was the Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) president until he was roped into the cabinet by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak (right), also dismissed talk that he would soon leave the government in frustration.

He said he is prepared for a long fight against corruption because it cannot be done in a short span of time.

“If I may add some humour here, when I was only three days in office, I was already labelled as a lame duck minister because the critics expected me to play the role of a sheriff like in the wild-wild west, going around fighting corruption with both guns blasting.

“Everyone seems to be like an expert in fighting corruption and expects me to do what they desire for themselves.

azlan“Instead of wishing me well they expect me to fail so that they can continue to find pleasure in condemning me or anyone and everyone no matter how sincere our motives are,” he said.

In his speech, he also urged MACC officers to be watchful of their own conduct and integrity because of the public’s expectations on them.

He also urged them to be proud of their work despite the negative perception on them.

“Let us all work together to prove the critics wrong,” he said.
