Former political aide detained for role in Tapah murder

A former special aide to PKR Tapah parliamentary candidate K Vasantha Kumar has denied any involvement in the murder of his ex-colleague K Murugan, as alleged by police in Perak.

However, the former aide, S Marimuthu, 38, who is now a factory worker, has lodged a police report on a false statement alleging his involvement in the killing.
Marimuthu has also been told that police have two criminal records against him.
He was arrested on a murder charge at the Dang Wangi police station this afternoon, when he went there to lodge his complaint on the "false report".
"The police told him that he was arrested under Section 302 of the Penal Code," Marimuthu's lawyer M Visvanathan said when contacted by Malaysiakini.

NONE"He's currently at the Dang Wangi police station lock-up. The police are arranging for him to be sent to the Batu Gajah police station," Visvanathan said.

Earlier this morning, Marimuthu held a press conference to brush off the police allegation of his involvement in the murder of his former colleague, Murugan (right).
"I was not involved in the murder of Murugan. The statement made by the police about my involvement is not correct," he told the  press conference in Kuala Lumpur.
"I also deny I have any criminal record. The statement by the police has tarnished my reputation," Marimuthu also said in a statutory declaration he made this morning.

Perak police deputy chief A Paramasivam has said that two men were wanted to facilitate in the probe  into the murder of Murugan (right).
'I have become a victim'

Paramasivam said Marimuthu was one of the suspects and that he had criminal records for involvement in two cases, one for murder and other for causing injuries, in Bidor, Perak, in 2008 and 2012 respectively.

"I have become a victim in this case. The police do not need to make the press statement that I am wanted for the murder," Marimuthu said, adding that he would show up at any police station if the police contacted him.

He also showed his people's volunteer corps or Rela identity card, saying that he joined Rela as a volunteer on May 22 this year.

The identity card would also serve as proof of his innocence of any crime, Marimuthu said, because a man with a criminal record would never be recruited into Rela.

NONEMarimuthu plans to lodge a report at the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur today over the "false statement" by police.

He may also follow up on this move with a defamation suit against the police officers involved, said Visvanathan (above), the lawyer who is also representing Murugan's family.
Following several deaths in police custody of late, Visvanathan said, Marimuthu was worried about his safety if he were to be detained by police.

He wished police would act professionally and fairly, and would investigate parties from the other side as well, as currently only Marimuthu's friends and Vasantha have been questioned in the investigation.

Murugan went missing on May 1, and his body was found in a pond three days later, with both hands and legs tied to some 52kg of scrap metal. He had reportedly been severely beaten as well.

Vasantha has decried the murder of Murugan, his former security aide, as politically motivated.

Meanwhile, human rights NGO Malaysians for Beng Hock representative Cheng Fui Ling said they will organise a candlelight vigil on June 9 to urge the police to act justly and profesionally in such matters.
