If needed, army will help police in Saturday rally

The police are ready for any eventuality at the much publicised opposition rally planned at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur this Saturday.

Director of Internal Security and Public Order Department Salleh Mat Rasid said it is the responsibility of the police to ensure national security and peace.

“So far, the police can still keep the peace. We keep in touch with the military and will ask them to help if neccessary,” he told reporters at the passing out parade of Orang Asli police constables at North Brigade Base, Police General Operations in Ipoh today.

Some 111 members received certificates after completing the basic course with focus on lectures, demonstrations and practical.

Salleh advised the public not to get involved with the opposition rally or with activities that violate the law.

Commenting on the arrest of a 15 year-old boy for buying air rifles from overseas online, he said the police have a network to detect those involved in purchasing firearms via the Internet.

“The police will monitor and take action after all the proof is gathered because the possession of firearms without licence or permit is an offence.”

He urged public with information on those who bought firearms illegally to immediately contact the police.
