PAS has given full backing to calls for the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission, saying it is the only way forward to restore the integrity of the police force.
“PAS is consistent in its stand that IPCMC is very much needed because it is specific to the police and can restore the integrity of police, so that people regain trust in the force,” said party vice president Salahuddin Ayub.
Salahuddin said the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission could not restore public confidence in the police force because it did not have a specific goal when it was established.
Salahuddin also questioned deputy inspector general of police Mohd Bakri Zinin for belittling the need for such a body such as IPCMC.
“His statement is inappropriate. Why the need for him to comment on IPCMC as he is an interested party in the police. The people want the police’s image to be restored,” he said.
Bakri had criticised the idea of setting up the IPCMC, and argued that existing laws already ensure that police adhere to standard operating procedure.
“I feel that the law is there and it is stronger than IPCMC. So we need to implement or enforce it,” he reportedly said.
