Apologise or face legal action, Anwar and Karpal warn TV3

Lawyer Karpal Singh and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have given TV3 seven days to retract and apologise over a footage which said the two were involved in bribing judicial officials and prosecutors.
In separate notices sent to the TV3 today, Karpal and Anwar warned legal action will be taken against the television station immediately if it did not comply with the notice as the allegation had seriously damaged their reputation as politiciians.
Both said they would file defamation suits against TV3 but pointed out that the retraction and apology would be considered by the court in deciding the quantum of damages.
They said TV3 must carry the retraction and apology in its prime-time television news section.
Karpal and Anwar had sent two earlier notices, requesting a video recording of the footage aired by TV3 in its Buletin Utama news segment. TV3 refused to entertain their requests.
The television station had carried a report that a former staff of Karpal’s legal firm had disclosed that his firm was involved in bribing the judiciary and the Attorney-General's Chambers.
The staff claimed that since 2008, Anwar had made several payments, to the tune of RM50 million, to Karpal's legal firm to bribe members of the judiciary and prosecutors.
Karpal and Anwar said the TV3 report had falsely and maliciously published words, implying that they had committed very serious crimes.
Both leaders had lodged police reports against TV3 and Dr Mazlan Ismail, the losing candidate for Permatang Pauh seat in the recent general election.
Dr Mazlan had also alleged he had received more than 6,000 anonymous letters stating that Anwar gave Karpal RM50 million as legal fees and also to bribe the prosecution and the judiciary.
