“He never returned his application form. We take it that he rejected the offer from the Malaysian government," said Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
He also said Putrajaya did not want his remains interred in the country as it could lead to a memorial dedicated to him.
"It's not so much about the ashes. We are afraid someone will then build a memorial for him and give him some sort of recognition," he said.
In a few hours more, the former Communist Party of Malaya secretary-general will be cremated. His family has yet to reveal what it plans to do with his ashes.
