Crime law changes not a return to ISA, insists Zahid

Amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) 1959 do not represent a return to the Internal Security Act (ISA), Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi insisted today, but he refused to elaborate on a new provision on detention without trial.

"No, this is not a return to the ISA. This is not a draconian law," Zahid told reporters outside the Dewan Rakyat today.

However, he refused to elaborate on the new provision for detention without trial brought into the amendments and told reporters "to wait until Sept 30" when he would wrap up the debates on the Bill and 10 other concurrent amendments in the House.

"Wait until then. I will explain. (The opposition) should debate with me in the House. I keep an open mind and I will take opinions from both sides," Zahid added.
