Stressing that IPCMC is not the only way to improve police efficiency, the Home Minister says the police would form an internal probe team consisting of lawyers, among others, as members.
KUALA LUMPUR: The police would form an internal investigation body comprising lawyers, among others, as its members to improve the efficiency of the force.
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in announcing this today, said the internal probe unit is not to be compared with the proposed Independent Police Complaint and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
“I would like to stress that the IPCMC is not the only answer to improve the efficiency of the police force.
“The cabinet has approved several measures including the formation of an internal investigation body consisting of lawyers and police officers,” said Zahid in reply to Lim Guna Eng (DAP-Bagan) at the Dewan Rakyat.
Zahid, however, did not give details on the plan.
The government has been under constant pressure to set up the IPCMC, following spate of custodial deaths. It was also to curb abuse of power among policemen.
Zahid also brushed aside contention that the Penang police are short of staff, saying that only 31 positions in the Penang police that were vacant.
He also said calls to increase the number of policemen attached to the Criminal Investigation Department to fight crime as “impractical”.
He said this was because crime prevention was not only the duty of the CID but also all those in the police force even if they are at the management level.
