JOHOR BARU - The Johor police have detected an international drug syndicate that had chosen the Senai International Airport as a transit point for smuggling drugs into the country.
Deputy Johor police chief Datuk Ismail Yatim said that an enforcement team had raided a hotel in Senai on yesterday and found what was believed to be more than three kilogrammes of syabu worth RM621,600.
"The 3,108 grammes of drugs was sufficient to cater to the needs of 15,540 users," he said at the state police contingent here today.
Ismail said a 41-year-old Indonesian man was arrested during the raid.
"International drug syndicates usually choose either the Kuala Lumpur International Airport or the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Selangor, but we believe this syndicate had chosen other international airports as a means to mislead police.
"Previously, the Customs Department officers at the Senai International Airport also detected two similar cases," he said.
Ismail said preliminary investigations revealed that the Indonesian drug mule, who was married and did not have a previous police records, was working for an Indian-based drug syndicate.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Acts 1952 which carries mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
The suspect is being remanded until Sept 17.
