MCA seeks legal advice on EGM

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek says there is a lack of time to conduct the EGM due to the imminent election for central delegates.
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai’s call for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) has failed to get past the party’s presidential council meeting today.
MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek said there was a lack of time to conduct the EGM because the new batch of central delegates is to be elected on Sept 22, while the party secretary-general would need about 26 days to notify the current batch of delegates to attend the EGM.
Hence, the presidential council has resolved to put the EGM proposal on hold until a legal opinion is sought by Liow and Chua on the matter.
“We felt that by the time (the current delegates) receive the notice, the new list of candidates will be created. This will create a legal problem,” he said.
The EGM is proposed by Liow and 13 central committees to challenge a central committee’s decision to overturn the suspension of party’s former organising secretary Tee Siew Kiong.
Tee, a Chua protégé, was punished for assuming the Johor executive councillor post in June despite the party’s pledge not to accept any government post after a dismal election performance.
