'Top 15pct of our graduates are world class'

Despite local universities slipping in international rankings, the government says that foreign investors have had no difficulties as yet finding local talents.

International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed said that this is because the top 15 percent of graduates are world class.

“The companies are looking for outstanding people and there have been enough (local graduates) to fill the positions...

“Our worry is the bottom 30 to 40 percent and our challenge is to lift and improve overall standards,” he told reporters.

All but one public university had fallen in the World University Rankings 2013/2014.

Only Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) improved marginally, climbing three places to 355 in the ranking of 800 universities around the world by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

The annual survey is considered one of the most trusted for university rankings in the world.

UTM’s position is shared with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which fell 26 spots to 326th this year.

Malaysia’s premier universiti Universiti Malaya remained in the top 200 but dropped 11 places to 167th place.

The top university in Asia is the National University of Singapore (NUS) at 24th spot.

NUS started out as Universiti Malaya’s Singapore campus in 1959. UM and NUS split into two universities in 1962.

According to QS, Malaysian universities are “not yet producing highly-cited research but have developed a solid profile among the world’s academicians and graduate employers”.
