SHOULD NAJIB RESIGN? ‘If I reveal the results, I will be in trouble’ – UMCEDEL director
“Should Najib resign after failing to get two-third majority in the 13th general election” – that was the question posted in one of slides presented by Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCEDEL) director Mohammad Redzuan Othman that caught the attention of many yesterday.
However, the study result on that particular question was not revealed.
“I can only say, the result is not too pleasant, and can put me in trouble if I reveal it,” said Redzuan when pressed by reporters yesterday.
Explaining further, Redzuan said UMNO members and ordinary public had pinned high hopes on Najib to lead BN to regain two-third majority in the last election following BN’s biggest loss in 2008.
“There’s already a precedent in Pak Lah (Abdullah Badawi)’s time, where he resigned after failing to get two third majority. So, you can gauge what the people want this time,” he added.
UMCEDEL presented its findings on several national issues, including the reconciliation between BN and Pakatan Rakyat yesterday based on survey carried out between August 15 to September 10, approximately three months after GE13.
1,546 respondents from the pool of registered voters were selected to give their opinion.
Redzuan said a whopping 69 percent of respondents wanted some sort of reconciliation between BN and PR, citing fatigue of constant bickering between the two coalitions.
“Maybe the people are fatigued with the political bickering after GE13. This is the public view, and of course politicians know better,” he said.
The position of Anwar Ibrahim in Malaysia politics also formed part of UMCEDEL’s study. 55 percent respondents agreed that Anwar needed to stay on despite his failure of capturing Putrajaya in the May election.
