There is a sharp increase in the number of applicants to local universities this year.
GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has received an overwhelming number of applications for its new academic intake.
Its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Omar Osman said students were now draw into courses at the university that previously did not interest them.
“Some of the courses which were once shunned by students are now drawing them and the number of applications has exceeded the overall application for admission this year, which totaled more than 25,000,” he said in a statement here today.
This year the university has taken in about 4,684 students with 3,272 who will be studying at the main campus in George Town, 678 students at the engineering campus at Nibong Tebal and 734 at its health campus in Kelantan.
Meanwhile, in Kota Kinabalu 5,072 students were offered places in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in conjunction with the new enrollment session for the 2013/2014 academic term today.
UMS vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said of the total 2,813 were arts stream students and 2,259 were science stream.
