Even as the police arrested two men in Penang last night for carrying momentoes of Chin Peng, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said Putrajaya has not banned any books of the late communist leader.
"We are not so cruel... we have not yet banned any such books," Zahid told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
He however said "occasional" checks will be conducted by the authorities at bookstores, although he did not elaborate on the reason for the checks.
Two men - a Malaysian and a Hong Kong citizen - were arrested at the Penang International Airport late last night for allegedly smuggling materials related to the Communist Party of Malaya.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanapi said the duo were detained after arriving on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok.
The two, aged 59 and 66, were taken to the Bayan Baru police station for questioning. They are being investigated under the Printing Presses and Publications Act.
Rahim told reporters police seized eight CDs, 11 souvenirs and 12 books related to Chin Peng and the CPM.
MORE TO COME.
