Zahid Hamidi’s contradictory statements on crime draw flak

Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) has come under criticism today for contradicting himself in Parliament by saying that the crime situation in the country is still under control.
Zahid said there has been a drastic decrease in crime activities following the arrest of about 7,200 suspected triad members, from August 17 till now.
But last month, Zahid said he had proof of rising crime.
"I have proof of the rise in crime, particularly in the red spots," he said while announcing the anti-crime crackdown dubbed Ops Cantas on August 20.
In an immediate response, DAP Petaling Jaya Utara lawmaker Tony Pua said Zahid's claim was not credible.
"If it's under control, why is he still jumping up and down over the issue of the Emergency Ordinance?" Pua asked.
"The EO and crime rates are not mutually exclusive. So he has to decide if the repeal of the EO is the problem or if the crime rate is the problem.
"His statements are contradictory. He should sort his mind out," Pua added.
Zahid meanwhile told Parliament that a suggestion by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to increase the number of police personnel in the Crime Investigation Department by 50% was not practical.
However, he said Putrajaya was planning to hire 4,000 new personnel to beef up the force by 2015.
