ARE THE CHINESE SURPRISED? Unified Exam Cert NOT accepted for entry to unis - Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR - The Education Ministry does not accept the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) issued by the Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (MICSS) as a qualification for entry into public institutions of higher learning, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Thursday.

Muhyiddin, who is also the education minister, said the teaching and learning system employed by the MICSS did not apply the policies and curriculum of the National Education System.

"Nevertheless, the ministry allows students with a pass in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) who have the UEC and fulfil certain conditions to take up Chinese Language studies at the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia.

"The ministry does not propose to have other examinations for students entering universities and continues to maintain the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and the matriculation programme," he said when replying to Teresa Kok Suh Sim (DAP-Seputeh) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Kok had wanted to know whether the ministry proposed to have the same university entrance examination for all students that would replace the STPM, matriculation and other examinations and whether the UEC examination would be recognised.
