Govt: Youth shunning mainstream media

KUANTAN: Young Malaysians are leaning towards the social media for the latest news irrespective of its authencity.

National Unity and Integration Department director general Azman Amin said this was a dangerosu trend.

In expressing his concern over this, he said young people in the country appeared to have a greater tendency to turn to social media for latest information and were shunning the mainstream media.

“The social media has become the main source of information for those aged 30 and below.

“Right now, the mainstream media is no longer recognised by the young people.

“For them, the mainstream media is the source of information for old people,” he said when opening the ‘Semarak Patriotisme 1Malaysia’ programme here yesterday.

Azman said the worrying trend should be tackled wisely to stop wrong information from being massively circulated to the extent of affecting national unity and integration.
