SG LIMAU Despite MCA leaders’ criticism of Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir, who refused to help Chinese schools in the state, party vice-president Chor Chee Heung today defended Mukhriz by saying the MB's statement was “misinterpreted”.
Instead, Chor (left) blamed the media for inaccurately reporting the “real message” of the controversial statement by the son of the former premier.“On this, (MCA deputy president) Liow Tiong Lai had met Mukhriz at his official residence and found out he did not mean it that way,” he said after visiting the party operations centre for the Sungai Limau by-election today.
Accepting the explanation given to Liow, Chor said Mukhriz was saying he wanted to prioritise help to those who needed it the most.
Mukhriz reportedly said the state government would not entertain any request from Chinese schools in Kedah.
Pointing out that the Malays are the majority in Kedah, the menteri besar said he could not neglect those who supported the BN government.
MCA leader Loh Seng Kok reminded Mukhriz that his view was not only obsolete, it also would be construed as “treatment according to racial lines”.
“For example, both Chinese and Indians seek government assistance, but if investigation shows that Indians need it desperately, then we shall help them first... and we agree with this," Loh said.
Chor added that Mukhriz and Liow had reached a consensus for the state government to consult the MCA on allocations for Chinese schools.
