PAS MP gets heat on alleged threat by Najib

PARLIAMENT BN's Jasin MP Ahmad Hamzah has asked for Hanipa Maidin (PAS-Sepang) to be referred to Parliament's rights and privileges committee.

This is due to the PAS MP's referral to a statement allegedly made by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak about the Chinese community back in 1987.

NONEEarlier during the debate on the Security Offences (Special Measures) amendments in the Dewan Rakyat today, Hanipa (right) asked Noh Omar (BN-Tanjung Karang) about Najib's alleged threat to soak the keris with the blood of the Chinese during an Umno Youth rally.

"When Pekan (Najib) was the Umno Youth chief, he said he would soak the keris with the blood of the Chinese. Who started (racial tension in 1987)?" Hanipa asked when debating about the Ops Lalang operations back then.

Ahmad Hamzah said that Hanipa needed to be referred to the committee because he had made a serious allegation against the prime minister of the country.

Noh backed Ahmad Hamzah's call, and said that Hanipa must be referred to the rights and privileges committee if the Parliament was certain that Hanipa uttered such words.

Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee said that he would check the Hansard of the Dewan Rakyat and then refer to the matter to the Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, who also heads the rights and privileges committee, for a decision to be made as to whether Hanipa will be referred to it.

'Give recognition to Opposition leader'

Meanwhile, in a press conference earlier today, DAP's Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming urged Najib to officially recognise the parliamentary Opposition Leader's office.
NONEHe asked that the Opposition Leader be provided with greater emoluments, in line with other Commonwealth democracies.

He said that the Opposition leader must be given allocations and staff manpower similar to that of a cabinet minister.

"At the moment, the opposition leader's office only has three staff. Even a minister has eight staff," Nga (left) said.

He said that a lack of proper recognition of the Opposition leader's role and office would make it difficult for the opposition to act as a check and balance for government administration.
