PARLIAMENT Instead of critcising the government over its policies for the Indian community, Shahidan Kassim said those at the top should help those who are at the bottom.
Arguing that the Indians were successful, the minister in the prime minister's department said: "Even for academic achievers, the Indians ratio is high. It is just that there is a big gap between those who are at top of achievers and those who are dropouts.”
"So, those who are at the top should help out these dropouts instead of finding faults in what the government policies for Indians are," he told the Dewan Rakyat.
Shahidan claimed that the high number of Indian doctors and lawyers, which was higher than the Indian population ratio in the country, was proof that Indians are successful.
In defending the government's policies for Indians, he said that 30 percent of doctors are Indians while the amount of Indian lawyers in the country also far exceeds the population ratio.
"For lawyers, if you look at the population ratio, Indians are higher than Chinese or Malays," Shahidan said in response to a question from M Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat).
He also said that the fact that there are two cabinet ministers and one deputy minister from MIC is proof that the government holds "Indians in high regard."
Kulasegaran however poured cold water on Shahidan's explanation, saying that the government policies for Indians are "failed policies" and that the achievement of Indians are due to their own effort.

Critics have always accused the government of marginalising and sidelining the Indian community.
