Motions on Pom Pom island, assessment hikes rejected

Two emergency motions tabled by the opposition - one to discuss the recent kidnap and murder of a Taiwanese couple on Pom Pom island and the other on the drastic Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) assessment tax hikes on property owners - were rejected by deputy speaker Ronald Kiandee.

The first motion, brought by Kota Kinabalu MP Jimmy Wong, was rejected on the same grounds that most of the opposition motions have been thrown out - that the matter is "not urgent".

The motion to discuss the high assessment tax increases by DBKL tabled by Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun was rejected on technical grounds - that two motions cannot be tabled at the same time.

Both Fong and Wong are DAP parliamentarians.

"We all know that Taiwan already issued an Orange alert for its citizens from coming to Sabah east coast. This will affect the China tourists from coming here as well.

"But if the government allowed an emergency motion in Parliament, it will send  a message to the international community that it is taking this matter seriously," she said.

DAP's Sandakan MP Wong Tien Fatt also tabled a similar emergency motion on the abduction and murder case, but Kiandee gave priority to Jimmy Wong's motion, which was the same, but then said that the matter was under investigation and was thus not urgent.

Both Jimmy Wong and Wong later expressed their disappointment with the rejection of the motion, and said that BN doesn't seem to be taking Sabah security issues seriously.

Fong's motion meanwhile was to discuss the property tax hikes, which was up to 300 percent for some property owners in Kuala Lumpur under DBKL's ongoing property reevaluation in the city.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor justified the process by saying that DBKL had not reassessed property values in the city for 21 years now.
