Penang airport hit by flood

Though airport operations were unaffected, the excess rainwater spilled into the vehicle waiting area despite the recent installation of new drain system.
GEORGE TOWN: Sudden unusual heavy downpour caused flash flood outside Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas here today.
Senior airport manager Mohd Ariff Jaafar revealed that the exit compound area of arrival halls flooded due to unexpected heavy rain, five times higher than usual, at 3pm.
He said rainfall was recorded at about 58.2mm of rainfall during a 20-minute heavy downpour.
The usual rainfall volume is between 10mm and 15mm.
“Due to the unusual downpour, the rainwater started overflowing the vehicle waiting area and parking lot around 3.15pm.
“But the water did not seep into other parts of the airport.
“So airport operations were unaffected,” Mohd Ariff said when contacted.
The excess rainwater spilled into the vehicle waiting area despite the recent installation of new drain system under the RM250million upgrading works.
On this, Mohd Ariff explained the water did not fully subside due to the high rainfall volume.
Airport staff have since cleaned up the exit through the arrival concourse.
Last September, the airport experienced similar flood situation, in which passengers had to wade through the ankle-high rainwater at the affected areas including the arrival halls and apron area.
