'Jais is free to act for the sake of Islam'

Selangor State Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) is free to act against lawbreakers as it has the Agong's mandate to protect Islam, and is not answerable to the federal nor state governments, its parent body reiterated today.

The Selangor Islamic Council (Mais) said this, taking PAS MP Khalid Abdul Samad to task for stating yesterday that Mais was merely a tool of certain parties to create tension between Muslims and Christians.

Instead, Mais defended the Jais action in seizing 310 copies of Malay and Iban-language Bible as a lawful and straightforward action.

It also said it was Khalid (right) who needs to check his facts.

Mais refuted allegations that the council worked for Umno and that the action was pre-approved by the Home Ministry.

"Mais reaffirms that Jais need not inform any party when it wishes to take action under the enforceable laws because this will only disrupt its investigative process...

"The (controversial) situation now is sad and regretful because the basic principles of the country's laws, especially the power of the King, should be known by all lawmakers (MPs)," said Mais chairperson Mohd Adzib Mohd Isa in a statement.

It said the MP for Shah Alam had made the ignorant claims for political gain.

10-point solution pops up again

Jais raided the Bible Society of Malaysia’s (BSM) premises on Jan 2, claiming to enforce the Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988 which bans the use of the term 'Allah', among others, by non-Muslims in the state.

However, BSM had argued that it merely functions as importers of scriptures for the consumption of Christians and not propagating the religion among non-Muslims.

This was allowed under a 10-point agreement drawn up between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's cabinet and Christian groups.

Despite this first Jais arrest of a non-Muslim, Mais reiterated that the Islamic department had acted lawfully.

It also rebutted Khalid's claim that it had not learned from the previous Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) case, where its investigations failed to produce proof of the church evangelising Muslims.

"Investigations in that case could not be continued because of pressure and intervention from a third party. Therefore, Mais asks Khalid Samad and all other individuals not to interfere in  the on-going (Jais) investigations," Mohd Adzib said.

Finally, it warned Khalid and all other individuals to be mindful of the facts before jumping on the issue or face action based on the appropriate law.
