Police collecting evidence on New Year's Eve rally

The police will be gathering evidence and statements from witnesses on the illegal rally which disrupted the New Year’s Eve celebrations at Dataran Merdeka, last night.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Salleh Mat Rashid, when met by Bernama, urged all parties involved to come forward and lodge a police report.

“We will take action according to the law and now evidence and statements are being collected for investigation under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” he said.

At 11.30pm yesterday, the rally attended by 4,000 people turned violent and ended the New Year Eve concert organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) half an hour before the new year arrived.

Three policemen were injured as a result of the agressive situation and police also discovered four parangs and three knives in a drain at the Dayabumi Complex, situated not far from the location of the rally.

Police named four NGOs as organisers of the event, namely Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun), Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), Jingga 13 and Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM).

On Dec 24, police detained Turun chairperson Mohd Azan Safar, 24, under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and Section 124 (B) of the Penal Code.

Salleh said police will take action on the organisers because they had received 1,936 police reports from NGOs and individuals who protested against the event.

“This shows that a majority of 28 million Malaysians were against the rally because they are confident with the country’s democratic system.

“The people know there are other ways to channel their woes, which includes getting representatives to raise their problems in Parliament and that rallies are not a solution,” he said.

Salleh also praised the police for being professional in controlling the situation last night.
