MELAKA - A businessman was today released on police bail after being remanded on Jan 14 to assist in investigation under the Sedition Act for claiming to be the 'Sultan of Melaka'.
Melaka Deputy Police Chief, Datuk Shah Gzali Khan Shahadat said Noor Jan Tuah was released after his remand order expired today and investigation on the case was still ongoing.
"The case is still being investigated especially on his claim that he had received a letter of confirmation from the ICJ (International Court of Justice) where we need cooperation from the Attorney-General's Chambers to determine whether the claim was genuine or false.
"We will apply for a bond from the court to ensure that he does not organise any activity concerning the sultanate until the investigation is completed," he said when contacted by Bernama, here today.
Noor Jan, 57, was detained at 10.50am at the Anjung Batu Umbai Jetty, Jasin before boarding a boat to Pulau Besar for an activity with his 'followers'.
Last Wednesday, police obtained the green light from the Magistrate's Court to remand the businessman for four days which was later extended for another three days last Saturday.
Shah Gzali Khan said the police could call up Noor Jan at any time for further investigation. Noor Jan's counsel, Surjan Singh Sidhu said his client was released without any condition imposed and that he would cooperate with the police in investigation on the case.
Earlier, Noor Jan was seen leaving the Melaka Contingent Police Headquarters at 12.50pm in a blue-coloured BMW car after the police bail was settled. – Bernama
