Minister finds Karpal jibes unacceptable

The conduct of BN’s Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad and former BN parliamentary candidate Zulkifli Noordin in taking jibes at the death of former DAP supremo Karpal Singh is “very disappointing” and “unacceptable”, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Joseph Kurup said today.

Speaking to reporters after holding a get together session with the media in Kuala Lumpur, Kurup said it was not in his culture to make “harsh” statements against someone who had just passed away.

Zulkifli, a former Perkasa vice-president who contested and lost the Shah Alam parliamentary seat in the last general elections, tweeted that Karpal’s death paved way for the Kelantan state government to implement Hudud law in the state.

Karpal was known to be a vociferous opponent of Hudud.

Nawawi, meanwhile, shared picturesallegedly of Karpal’s deceased body online while taking a jibe at Karpal for infamously saying in 1990 that an Islamic state can only be established in Malaysia “over his dead body”.

“I cannot accept statements such as these. It is very sad to see someone utter that sort of thing,” Kurup said.

He added that even if Karpal was a political opponent, issues such as death and religion should never be used to claim more political mileage.

“You want to have political mileage, do not exploit the sad situation, and do not use religion,” he said.

“If you going to say something to make things even worse, better not say anything.”

He said that he hoped that Nawawi’s jibe in particular was a “personal opinion”, and warned that it would only serve to “ruin his good image.”

Karpal, who was former DAP national chairperson, and his aide Michael Cornelius Selvam Vellu, 39, were killed in a road accidentabout 1.10am yesterday near Kampar in Perak.
