RM1.6bil hospital contract was direct tender

The government revealed today that it entered into a contract worth more than RM1.6 billion for the building and maintenance of the Kuala Lumpur Women and Children's Hospital through direct tender.

Deputy Health Minister Dr Hilmi Yahya (right) told the Dewan Rakyat that the hospital was built by Konsortium Prohawk Sdn Bhd at a cost of RM848 million.

Replying to Rafizi Ramli (PKR-Pandan) during Question Time, Hilmi said the consortium was also given a 25-year contract for building maintenance, asset management and facilities maintenance, at a tune of about RM75 million a year.

"This method is detrimental to the rakyat, and is similar to how the UiTM campus was built,” Rafizi noted in a supplementary question.

"How many hospitals are built and will be built this way, which is costing the rakyat a lot when subsidies are being revoked?"

Hilmi replied that although 10 hospitals were to be built using the same model, the cabinet had recently revoked approval for these.

He also said the Health Ministry does not have a say in contracts for hospital construction.
