Syariah, civil courts urged to resolve inter-faith issues

The Syariah and civil courts have been urged to find a mechanism to resolve disputed cases involving Muslims and non-Muslims.

Nancy Shukri, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said it is time for both courts to work together in ironing out inconsistencies, as there different judicial systems for Muslims and non-Muslims.

"The two courts should study the legal aspects and sit down together to analyse issues that are often raised," she told reporters after the official launch of the construction of the Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam High Courts in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

She was asked to comment on the case of a Muslim convert Izwan Abdullah, who, locked in a custody battle with his Hindu ex-wife S Deepa, took their son away in Jelebu, Negri Sembilan, on April 8.

The minister said the case would be raised at the cabinet meeting tomorrow.

"The two courts have their respective system and authority. We will look at how best we can come up with the best mechanism while maintaining harmony in the process," she said.

On April 7, the Seremban High Court had awarded custody of the couple's two children to Deepa.

Izwan had earlier obtained a similar order from the Syariah Court.
