Trust us on water, pleads the Selangor MB

As frustrations mount over prolonged water rationing, Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has called on residents to trust the state to solve the crisis.

“We hope the rakyat will continue to be patient and trust the state in solving this problem, especially as we have already commenced early preparations to ensure fresh water supply for the upcoming dry season of five to six months,” he said in a statement.

He added that to keep residents in the loop on fresh water supply, he said, the Selangor government will hold press conferences once every two days starting this Friday.

The press conferences will be held by the executive councillor in charge of infrastruture Yunus Hairi, the Selangor Economic Planning Unit (Upen) and the Selangor Water Management Council (Luas).

Khalid (right) added that the executive council has also approved RM10 million for infrastructure works required to pump water from ponds and former mines into Sungai Selangor to raise the dam levels.

This is in preparation for the dry season expected from May to September.

As at 8am today the Sungai Selangor dam, which supplies 60 percent of Klang Valley residents, was at a critical level of 38.97 percent as the recent heavy downpours did not occur at catchment areas.

“Even though other dams have risen to more than 50 percent levels, the dams only supply a small portion of users (in Selangor),” he said.

He reiterated that the state will review the water levels on Friday and decide on the rationing, which has cause widespread frustration across the state.

Re-elected for the second term with a stronger mandate in 2013, the water crisis is the toughest faced by the Pakatan Rakyat Selangor government and has seen waning of goodwill for Khalid.
