Umno MP retracts FB remark on Karpal

BN's Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad today deleted a Facebook posting he made which made light of the death of Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh, claiming that it was “not serious”.

“I feel that Facebook is not official and not serious, so I did not expect what I wrote to become viral. If I wanted to make an official statement, I would surely be more careful,” he told Malaysiakini.

He had been asked why he had made such remarks only to delete them later.

Nawawi (left), who is also Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) chairperson, had this morning posted a picture collage which includes pictures purportedly of Karpal’s bleeding body.

The picture collage also included a 1990 Utusan Malaysia news clipping where Karpal said that an Islamic state would only exist in Malaysia “over (his) dead body”.

“Would anyone like to take on Karpal Singh’s challenge? Please give your names. Hehe,” he wrote in the posting which was deleted three hours later.

In a separate posting at about 11.30am he posted: “You can die when riding a car, face accidents on motorcycles, go missing on a plane, so it is better to ride a train. Campaign with KTMB.”

This posting, which has since been deleted, is believed to have been referring to the fatal road accident this morning and and Malaysia Airline’s Flight MH370 which is still missing after disappearing off radar screens 41 days ago.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth secretary Mohd Nasaie Ismail said that a police report will be lodged over a “seditious” fake text message circulating saying PAS Youth will “step over Karpal’s body”.

The message is attributed to PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat, but misspells his name. Suhaizan is now in Medina, after performing the umrah.

The fake text message reads: “A ceremony to step over Karpal’s body will be done at the Ipoh Hospital morgue at 1pm today. I will lead the ceremony.

“PAS Youth members and PAS members who are able to attend are invited to do so. The media is also invited to provide coverage. Thank you, Suhaizan Kayat (sic), PAS Youth chief.”

This is believed to be in reference to Karpal’s 1990 statement that an Islamic state can only exist in Malaysia “over (his) dead body”.

Karpal, 74, and his aide Michael Cornelius Selvam Vellu, 39, were killed in a road accident this morning near Kampar at about 1.10am.

The former DAP chairperson’s sudden departure has shocked the nation, and elicited a flood of eulogies from both sides of the political divide.
