An activist says he will lobby for international support, including from Islamic organisations.
GEORGE TOWN: A Christian activist plans to organise a rally at Dataran Merdeka if the bibles seized from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) are destroyed.
K Sudhagaran Stanley, who chairs the Episcopal Commission for Migrant and Itinerants in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, said the rally would bring together all peace-loving Malaysians irrespective of religious background.
In a statement issued late yesterday, he said his organisation would lobby for international support, including from Islamic organisations, and would expose the Malaysian government’s “hypocrisy in preaching moderation to the world”.
He said PAS leaders too would be wooed to join the rally, to be billed as Walk for Peace and Love.
He claimed to have already received “tremendous public support” for the rally.
The Selangor Religious Department (Jais) seized about 300 copies of Malay and Iban translations of the Bible last January. Jais and the Selangor Islamic Council (Mais) are resisting calls for their return to BSM and are seeking a court ruling to dispose of them.
Stanley blamed the Federal Government for current religious tensions in the country, but urged it to compel Mais and Jais to return the bibles to BSM.
His statement also addressed the Selangor Government, saying it should remove excessive powers from Jais and Mais and sack religious officers defying its directives.
“Return the bibles now and stop the political drama,” he said.
“Let us all unite as one Malaysian race and defend our country from extremism.”
