Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also called Parliament a "rubber stamp" before but no action was taken against him, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said.
According to Anwar, Mahathir said this during the time of Tunku Abdul Rahman but got away with it, unlike PKR MP N Surendran who was today suspended for six months for stating the same.
"It is only because we are from Pakatan Rakyat that such action is being taken.
"When Umno members themselves did it, no action was taken," Anwar told reporters after Surendran was slapped with the suspension today.
Mahathir was seen as a strong critic of Tunku during the tenure of the country's first prime minister.
Anwar had fumed that no debate had taken place before Surendran was suspended.
“They have suspended a MP without any debate, we were just discussing procedural matters, and all the regulations we raised, were rejected,” he said.
“Procedure has to be followed. You can refer to the rights and privileges committee, and there should be a study (on the accusation),” he added.
He described the punishment meted out on Surendran as having been done in a very “high-handed manner”.
