The public should take a forum organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) on the usage of the word Allah by Christians ‘positively’ it was to promote ‘intellectual discussion’.
The call was contained in a written answer by the Education Ministry to Darell Leiking (PKR-Penampang) delivered during today’s Parliament sitting.
The MP wanted to know if the ministry was going to act against UiTM for organising the forum (left) which had been described by some quarters as a ‘Christian-bashing’ exercise.
"The facts and discussion during this seminar should be seen positively as a form of cultivating the mind and intellect," the ministry said.
It described the program as an ‘academic’ exercise to explain the Allah controversy which had become ‘a topic of discussion’.
'Being confused'
The ministry said participants at the forum had been briefed beforehand that the motive for the controversial event was ‘not to attack the beliefs and faiths of other religions’ (pix, below).
"(The program) was merely to defend the dignity of Muslims in the country and also to give them an understanding as they are being confused by this issue.
It was also to speak about the challenges that Muslims face in protecting the sanctity of their religion," the ministry added in its reply.
It further said the forum, which was open only to Muslim students, enabled the students to understand the issue at hand and help build ‘close ties between them and a multi-religion society’.
